  1. Hi Grampy,

We wish we could be there in person to sing Happy Birthday and then pound out a crazy song on your organ in honor of the big day! But the organ playing will have to wait until we drive out to Massachusetts this summer. We miss you and love you! Happy 95th!

    Staying warm in sunny Minneapolis,

  11. Happy Birthday, Grampy! I appreciate your wisdom, humor and ability to carry a tune. I don't appreciate all the success your Eagles have had on the ice against my Golden Gophers. Wish we could be there to help you celebrate, hope to see you soon.

  14. Hi Grampy,

Happy birthday! I wish we could be there to celebrate with you in person, but we’ll be thinking of you.

Looking at all these pictures makes me realize how many happy families can be traced back to you and Nana. Even though we’re scattered across states and time zones, the family ties are always there. I think about you (and everyone else in these pictures) often, even when I’m lousy about keeping in touch.

Thanks for sharing your wit, musical talents and sports insights over the years -- and for always keeping us on our toes. I remember getting a letter from you my freshman year of college that contained a newspaper clipping about Trinity Church in Boston and how it has a floating foundation. Your query about how a floating foundation works sent me to the engineering library so I could reply intelligently!

Enjoy the birthday celebration. We’ll raise a glass to you and the entire extended Sullivan clan from here.

    Love,
    Ann

  15. Dear Grampy,

Since a great line has already been used, I'm going to use my legal writing 101 skills to reiterate the assertion that "you're the best." See Henry, supra. I agree.

I wish we could be there to celebrate with you, but we'll be thinking of you here in Norfolk, Va. At dinner tonight, I'll raise my glass to Clare's sippy cup for a 95th birthday toast (and of course, say "Dick"), as Erin throws some food on the floor. We're all looking forward to seeing you soon; in fact, we just bought flights for April.

    Happy birthday!

    Love,
    Dave

  16. Dear, dear Uncle Walt,
I suppose that I too clould call you "grampy"
because that is truly what you are to all of us
who have had the pleasure of your company over the years (to paraphrase some famous composer).
You are the one shinning star who has made it
to this truly remarkable plateau out of all the people in "my" family (including all the in-laws) and for that you derserve a hearty
    CONGRATULATIONS!
I can state with assurance, Walt, that none of us would be the people we became or are becoming without you in our lives.
Happy Birthday, have a GREAT Day, with Love,
    Connie and Jill

  17. Hi Dad, and Greetings from Kauai:
Last week I warned Chris Bednarz that in 27 years, he'd be as old as I am. This week you'd be able to warn me that in 28 years, I'll be as old as you are.
Six thousand miles makes it hard for us to join your party, but Linn and I wish you a great and happy 95th birthday.

    Love,
    Bob and Linn

  22. Dear Grampy,

It's difficult to express, in just a few words, how much you've meant to me, and to all of us. You've shown us the importance of education, discipline, faith, love, and humor in life, and for that, we are grateful! I'm sorry I can't be there to celebrate with you on your birthday, but I will be thinking of you, and I hope to see you soon.
    Love,

    Doug

  23. Happy 95th Birthday Dad,

Your wonderfully positive attitude about life serves all of us with proof of the truth of the saying that, "it is not age that counts but mileage." For you the miles have been enjoyed to the utmost so the wear and tear is held to an absolute minimum.

Thanks for all your love over the years and for continuing the inspiration of your positive example.

    Love, Gary

  24. Grampy -

Happy 95th birthday! We are so very lucky to have you as the head of our family! From my youngest memories, I loved to spend summers with you and Nana in Mattapoisett. As I grew up, I was alternately afraid of the quiz questions you'd pose to me and excited to learn more from you. In fact, I remember being in college and your testing me about Georgetown's history - I'm sure you taught me more about the school than I knew from attending!

The best thing you taught me, though, was the importance of family. We are all so lucky to have such a wonderful, giving family and I know everyone learned that from the love you've shown to all of us. Every new member of the family is fortunate to be touched by your giving spirit.

This past summer, we were so happy to be able to introduce Jack to you. Despite his shrieks and cries, you were welcoming and patient. And of course, he was soothed by your organ playing! At Christmas, we loved to watch Jack as he was captivated by you, and we look forward to all the interactions you'll have with him going forward.

We won't be with you in person Thursday night, but as everyone else said above, we'll toast to you - and Jack will tip his milk bottle to you too!

    Much love,

    Christine, John and Jack

  26. Happy 95th Grampy!

On my first date with my then future wife our first stop was Framingham Union Hospital. As I sat in the car in the parking lot while Jeanne visited her grandfather, I had no idea how much of an impact he would have on my (our) lives. She was very worried about you that night. That was July 1992. Can you imagine what she would have said if I told her that 16+ years later we would be writing on your birthday blog for your 95th birthday… other than the obvious… “What the heck is a blog”

Until I was fortunate enough to encounter the Cox branch of the Sullivan family tree, I had no experience having a Grandfather. You have been so amazing to me as the Grandfather I never had for so long that it feels like you’re the Grandfather I’ve always had. You are an inspiration to us all on so many levels Grampy. Thanks for showing us the way, and for being a great Grandfather to Jeanne and me, and a great Great-Grandfather to Henry, Sam and Emily.

As you know, the second stop on that first date was La Cantina…where we look forward to joining you to celebrate your 95th birthday dinner.

    We love you Grampy.

    Mark

  27. Look at what you and Nana started! All these generations and all of these stories begin with the two of you. And there are so many memories to thank you for:

...visiting us when we were living so far away in Europe ... being that friendly face at the BC half times ... letting me live in your home as I searched for my first job ... attending the Christening of each of our three children ... watching over us at Harbor Beach ... those long swims when we talked about life and important decisions ... and saying grace at all of our holiday meals.

You and Nana have been there, guiding us at every important moment throughout our lives -- we love you and we're so thrilled to be celebrating your 95th birthday with you!

    Love,

    Jeanne

  29. Hi Dad,
And what a great party it was! Seeing all the swell ( and fast growing) little kids belonging to Jeanne, Mark, and Greg, and having a chance to visit a bit with all of three of them and Doug Sullivan too as the "surprise bonus guest" was great fun. It was as much a party for Marie, Gary and me as it was for you, so thanks for celebrating your day with all of us .... it was wonderful!
See you in April, Love, Dick
